Cal men's rowing alums Niki van Sprang and Joachim Sutton each earned berths in the upcoming Summer Olympics in Tokyo on Sunday.

Van Sprang and Sutton finished 1-2 in the finals of the men's pair at the Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland. The top two boats garnered automatic berths to the Summer Games in Tokyo.

Van Sprang, racing for The Netherlands alongside partner Guillaume Krommenhoek, won the qualification final in a time of 6:36.60. Sutton, rowing for his native Denmark with partner Frederic Vystavel, were right behind at 6:38.67.

"It's awesome to see the two of them racing alongside each other for different countries and both achieve the goals they've been working toward for over a year now," Cal head coach Scott Frandsen said. "There is a huge sense of pride that these guys came through the program and are now at that level, and it's good for the mentality of the guys on our team now that the path is there for them to have success at Cal and then continue on to the Olympic level."

Van Sprang is a 2016 graduate who helped the Bears win the IRA national championship as a senior. He twice earned All-Pac-12 recognition. Sutton also helped Cal win the IRA national championship as a sophomore after being named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year as a freshman. He was a three-time All-Pac-12 pick overall.

The men's rowing event at the Tokyo Games is scheduled for July 23-30 on the Sea Forest Waterway.
